At SGML96 - Europe, a paper by Ken Holman was presented entitled Producing Presentation-oriented Technical Manuals from Content-oriented Information Models. This original paper described the theory of operation of a publishing system architecture designed to produce a number of diverse information products, initially printed technical manuals, from a single store of engineering and technical information.
This paper will describe the some results of various trial projects initiated by the DND CALS Office to validate various aspects of this architecture, and the current state of both the DND CALS DTD and the publishing architecture. Before doing so, we will provide highlights of the original paper as background.
